CITY OF ANGELS

City of Angels was originally conceived as a feature-length documentary exploring the hidden social landscape of Los Angeles, but the project ultimately survived as a series of unfinished documentary sequences. The film turns away from the familiar mythology of Hollywood and instead looks toward the city’s underbelly—immigrants, activists, outsiders, and people existing somewhere between reinvention and displacement. It opens with an anti-Putin protest involving Pussy Riot activists, immediately presenting Los Angeles as more than an American dream factory: it becomes a meeting point for conflicts, identities, and histories carried from thousands of miles away.

Throughout the surviving material, the city feels less like a permanent home than a temporary refuge for people escaping former lives or attempting to construct new ones. Rather than offering a conventional documentary thesis or authoritative narration, the project developed into something more impressionistic—a collection of faces, environments, political actions, and fleeting encounters that function almost like cinematic field notes.

Its unfinished nature ultimately became part of its identity. What remains feels like evidence from an incomplete investigation into a city that is glamorous and desperate, welcoming and alienating, politically charged and strangely indifferent at the same time. City of Angels never became the documentary it was intended to be, but its fragments preserve the beginning of a larger portrait of Los Angeles seen not from the postcard, but from its margins.
